The Create1World competition is run by Massey University and is open to students from Years 9 - 13. The purpose of the competition is to explore ways in which creativity can be used to address global problems. Students are invited to create a work that fits into one of the following categories: media and social studies, speech and drama, creative writing or music. Cash prizes are awarded for winners. Details are here. Don't forget if you want any support, Mrs Gooch has Thursday lunchtimes available in A5 to help you with your entry. Entries are due on October 15th.
ICAS preparation support will continue to be offered in A5 during lunchtimes in Term 3 for any Middle School and Junior School students enrolled in the English and Maths ICAS exams coming up in July and August. However, this slot is also available for any student from Junior, Middle or Senior Schools, who would like support or to chat about any of the competitions and opportunities mentioned on this webpage. Mrs Gooch can help you with getting your entries in, nutting out ideas, getting resources you might need or connecting you with other students who might be interested in the same thing. So Thursday lunchtimes, Term 3, A5 with Mrs Gooch - come on over.
On Monday 6th August, students from Year 7-9 have the opportunity to attend a Stretch and Challenge event at Scots College. The programme involves a range of topics to extend gifted students including:
If you are keen on attending this event, please could you ask your parents to email Mrs Gooch directly on [email protected] (she is currently not able to receive student emails). The cost will be approximately $55 including transport. Students will need to be up to date with their school work in order to attend. More information about Academy Conferences is found on their website, and the programme for the day is attached.
On 21 June the Centre for Science & Citizenship Trust is running an 'enQuiring minds' programme for Year 10 students in Johnsonville that explores these questions:
The workshop runs from 9am – 1pm, so you would miss periods 1-4 and arrive back at school at lunchtime. I am keen to take a group of interested students to this event. The cost is $20 each, plus transport. Take a look at the flyer attached. If you would like to go please email Mrs Gooch [email protected] by 5pm on Friday 8th June. She will then check with your teachers and parents that you are able to go and get back to you with the arrangements for the day. Want to start University before you've even finished school? The Cambridge Immerse Summer (UK Summer, not NZ Summer) Programmes offer students aged 13-15 years and 16-18 years the opportunity to see what it would be like to study at University level. Some great brain food! They are held in July and August and are worth considering for 2018 or 2019. Programmes for ages 13-15 year olds include: Medicine and Biological Sciences, Law, Politics and International Relations, and Creative Writing. For ages 16-18 years there are 16 topics on offer. Don't forget to check out the costs page!
If you are a Year 9 or 10 student and are passionate about speaking or justice - or even better, speaking for justice - the Just Talk speech competition is for you. To enter you record your speech and enter the link to the recording to the competition. Entries are open until 10 December, so you have tonnes of time to enter. Congratulations to Erinn Aspell of 10LG who won second prize in this competition in 2017!
If you are a keen public speaker, or are looking for the opportunity to demonstrate your leadership skills and political awareness, the Race Unity Speech awards are for you. Some of you may remember Mira Karunanidhi who was Hobson Prefect in 2017. Mira had success in this competition in two successive years and this lead to a number of other opportunities for her. Give it a go! If you want feedback on your speech and practice time, see Holly Gooch.
