ICAS preparation support will continue to be offered in A5 during lunchtimes in Term 3 for any Middle School and Junior School students enrolled in the English and Maths ICAS exams coming up in July and August. However, this slot is also available for any student from Junior, Middle or Senior Schools, who would like support or to chat about any of the competitions and opportunities mentioned on this webpage. Mrs Gooch can help you with getting your entries in, nutting out ideas, getting resources you might need or connecting you with other students who might be interested in the same thing. So Thursday lunchtimes, Term 3, A5 with Mrs Gooch - come on over.
On Friday 13th July, Victoria University is hosting a Tech Day for Girls. Registrations close 29th June. Click here for more details.
Engineering week takes place on the 13th - 16th August in Wellington. We have booked tickets for five different events which includes trips to Beca, Aurecon, Xero and WSP Opus suitable for year 10-13. If you would like to be a part of one of these trips, you will need to email me ASAP telling me which trip/s you would like to go on. It will be first in first served. Note that you can't do both trip 3 and 4 as they are on the same day. Similarly, you can't do both trip 3 and 5 as they are both the same trip, just on different days so we can get more students there. Here are the details of the 5 trips:
Trip 1 Monday 13th August 9am – 3.15pm Aurecon Year 10 Calling all future engineers! We have an action-packed engineering day planned for you, including plenty of hands-on activities to demonstrate the real-life applications of engineering. You'll have the chance to talk to and learn from lots of different types of engineers, including civil, structural, mechanical, chemical/process and earthquake engineers. Come along to get an insight into the groundbreaking technology Aurecon is using and learn how we apply our knowledge as engineers in bringing ideas to life. To read more about Aurecon, visit the website. Trip 2 Tuesday 14th August 10am – 12pm Xero Years 11, 12, 13 Xero makes cloud-based accounting software that is changing the world for small businesses. Come see our software engineers at work, hear how they got from school to one of New Zealand's most successful software companies, and have a go at writing your own software to control robots! Read more about Xero on the wesbite. Trip 3 Wednesday 15th August 9am – 3pm Beca Years 11, 12, 13 Our clients do incredible things every day. They are transforming their communities and changing lives through the structures they build, the products they manufacture, the services they provide, and the families they support. And we are right there alongside them. We are the problem-solvers – the thinkers, the creators, the planners and practitioners – who work together to make everyday better. We are 3000-plus professionals spread across 20 offices across the Asia Pacific. But we are One Beca. Beca would like to invite students to come along and learn about the discipline of engineering and the wonderful career opportunities it can provide. Our one day programme will consist of presentations by industry staff, a site visit and an exciting practical exercise which we hope will provide students with a better understanding of the many different streams one can take if pursuing a career in the engineering industry. To read more about Beca, visit the website. Trip 4 Wednesday 15th August 9am – 2.30pm WSP Opus Years 11, 12, 13 During this office visit you'll hear about who WSP Opus are and projects WSP Opus have worked on. You'll hear from engineers from different backgrounds who'll talk about who they are, what they do at WSP Opus and their career path. After lunch, we'll give you an engineering-challenge to do in groups. We'll take you on an office tour to meet our people working on real-live jobs and you'll even leave with a gift! If you'd like to read more about WSP Opus, visit the website. Trip 5 Thursday 16th August 9am – 3pm Beca Years 11, 12, 13 Our clients do incredible things every day. The London International Youth Science Forum has the theme of Science for the Future and is an opportunity for STEM lovers to extend themselves. Participants must be between 16 - 21 years on the date of the programme which runs from 25th July to 8th August. The programme costs 1,975 pounds per student and applications close on 11th June if not all places are filled prior. For more information and apply go here.
If you love art, engineering, being out late and the possibility of some really good food truck food, then you will want to head down to the Lux Festival on the Wellington Waterfront. The Lux Festival is a free festival that features artworks that make use of lighting. This year it will be held from 18th - 27th May. Wrap up warm and head on down.
Learning doesn't need to stop when you are not at school! Khan Academy offers free online courses in a wide range of topics. You can extend yourself in Maths or Science, or explore something new and different like astronomy, medicine, computer animation or art history. Give it a go.
If you love the idea of making things work, finding out how things work, or inventing and designing things that work you will be interested in the Engineering Week coming up in August. We don't have much detail about what is involved yet as the programme is still being designed, but at this stage, if you are keen on engineering opportunities - this one or others, please email [email protected] to go on the list of interested students. You may also like to keep an eye on this website for details as they are released. Engineering week is for Years 10-13 only, but other opportunities may apply to younger students.
