If you see your future in business and entrepreneurship then The Brave Thinkers Programme is a great opportunity to test that out and get your CV looking fantastic. The Brave Thinkers Programme will be running in Palmerston North during the July school holidays as part of New Zealand Business Week and is open to Year 12 and 13 students from around New Zealand. Students will meet business leaders and also develop their own virtual companies and compete in a Dragon's Den style challenge (with a chance to win $3,000). Also note that students who participate in this and then go on to study at Massey University will get a $1,000 scholarship. If you love the idea of making things work, finding out how things work, or inventing and designing things that work you will be interested in the Engineering Week coming up in August. We don't have much detail about what is involved yet as the programme is still being designed, but at this stage, if you are keen on engineering opportunities - this one or others, please email [email protected] to go on the list of interested students. You may also like to keep an eye on this website for details as they are released. Engineering week is for Years 10-13 only, but other opportunities may apply to younger students.
If you are a senior student keen on environmentally sound business practices, there is the opportunity for you to participate in the NZ Environmental Entrepreneurship competition. You work in teams of 3-4 and you may have students from other schools in your team. You will work with a mentor to develop your ideas for a solution to an environmental and business issue and present this to judges. For those of you who have done the BP Business Challenge before and liked it this is the thing for you. More info here.
You will have all heard that we have the Centenary coming up. What you might not have known is that we have an Archives room that contains all sorts of amazing artefacts from Queen Margaret College's history. Ms Allen is pulling together a team of people to explore these in preparation for the Centenary. Here is her invitation for interested students in Years 9 - 13:
I am looking for a team of students who can help me with the school archives. My aim is to explore the history of the school through the archives in preparation for the centenary next year and ask what stories can these objects tell us? It would involve:

The annual Academy Conference is on at Scots College on 15 May. These conferences are exceptionally challenging and exceptionally inspiring - amazing brain food. Essential for anyone who is intending on attending a top UK or US academic University, particularly Oxford. The conference is run like a university lecture, and will give you a taste of what to expect there. The line-up of talks for 2018 is as follows:
- Rock in 11 dimensions: where physics and guitars collide. - Logic and alternative facts. Square Box, Round Pizza, Triangle Slices. A philosophical investigation. - What dreams may come? Examining claims about the afterlife. - Debate: everyone should always tell the truth. - Motivational: a gold medal mindset. Suitable for Seniors only. If you are a keen public speaker, or are looking for the opportunity to demonstrate your leadership skills and political awareness, the Race Unity Speech awards are for you. Some of you may remember Mira Karunanidhi who was Hobson Prefect in 2017. Mira had success in this competition in two successive years and this lead to a number of other opportunities for her. If you are between 9 and 16 years old and you have written a short story less than 1,000 words you can submit it to the New Zealand Festival Young Writers Award. Entries are due on 19th February so don't delay! Here is more information about the competition:
