ICAS preparation support will continue to be offered in A5 during lunchtimes in Term 3 for any Middle School and Junior School students enrolled in the English and Maths ICAS exams coming up in July and August. However, this slot is also available for any student from Junior, Middle or Senior Schools, who would like support or to chat about any of the competitions and opportunities mentioned on this webpage. Mrs Gooch can help you with getting your entries in, nutting out ideas, getting resources you might need or connecting you with other students who might be interested in the same thing. The London International Youth Science Forum has the theme of Science for the Future and is an opportunity for STEM lovers to extend themselves. Participants must be between 16 - 21 years on the date of the programme which runs from 25th July to 8th August. The programme costs 1,975 pounds per student and applications close on 11th June if not all places are filled prior. For more information and apply go here.
If you like ICAS exams, you will love the University of Canterbury Great Kiwi Science, English and Mathematics competitions. These exams are available for Year 5 & 6 students, Year 7 & 8 students, and Year 9 & 10 students. The Science exam involves questions about planet earth and beyond, the physical world and the material world and draws on student's critical thinking, investigative, and interpretative skills. The Maths exam includes questions on number and algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. The English exam tests students' skills in comprehension, grammar, spelling and understanding of audience and purpose. The cost is $8.30 per exam. The exams will be held in the last three weeks of Term 2. Prizes are awarded to top students in each exam. Learning doesn't need to stop when you are not at school! Khan Academy offers free online courses in a wide range of topics. You can extend yourself in Maths or Science, or explore something new and different like astronomy, medicine, computer animation or art history. Give it a go.
If you love the idea of making things work, finding out how things work, or inventing and designing things that work you will be interested in the Engineering Week coming up in August. We don't have much detail about what is involved yet as the programme is still being designed, but at this stage, if you are keen on engineering opportunities - this one or others, please email [email protected] to go on the list of interested students. You may also like to keep an eye on this website for details as they are released. Engineering week is for Years 10-13 only, but other opportunities may apply to younger students.
