The Rotary Club of Wellington North Inc is seeking applicants for Scholarships
Applications will be received from individuals to assist with cost of tertiary education, vocational training or development of life-skills. Grants are available to students of any age who come from the Greater Wellington area and who can demonstrate financial need. The amount awarded varies but typically is in the range of $1,000 to $5,000. Further information and application forms can be obtained here. During the upcoming school holidays, on 5th October 2018, Rata Studios are hosting a digital design workshop for students in Years 7 - 8 (9am-12pm), and in Years 9-13 (12.30pm - 3.30pm), with lecturers from Victoria University. The workshop will involve creating digital textures and building a virtual reality tree house. Cost is $50. Click here to find out more or to enrol online.
The MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology is a NZ government funded Centre of Research Excellence. It is running two camps for current Year 12 and 13 students who are keen on Science on 13th-18th January 2019. Nanocamp is held at the University of Canterbury. Discoverycamp is held at Otago University and at Massey University in Palmerston North and is for Maori and Pasifika students. If you are planning on studying Science at The University of Auckland, consider applying for the Science Scholars Programme. This is a competitive programme that is for students who are keen to be involved in answering science's burning questions. The programme involves receiving one on one mentoring, careers support as well as cross-disciplinary and research opportunities as you attend additional seminars and meet visiting scientists in person. Note that applications are due on 8th December 2018 (for students attending in 2019), however, if you apply before September 8th you are guaranteed a place in O'Rorke Hall (you also need to apply for the hall as well).
On November 15th 2018, Massey University is hosting the Create1World Creative Activism and Global Citizenship conference. The conference is open to students from Years 9 - 13 and involves panel discussions, workshops, activities and performances designed to fuel your creativity and consider how you can use creativity for good. The Create1World competition is run by Massey University and is open to students from Years 9 - 13. The purpose of the competition is to explore ways in which creativity can be used to address global problems. Students are invited to create a work that fits into one of the following categories: media and social studies, speech and drama, creative writing or music. Cash prizes are awarded for winners. The University of Canterbury Science Summer Camp is for Year 11s that are interested in studying Science at University. It is held from 2-7th December 2018 and students stay on campus and attend lectures, labs and events. Applications are due by 14th September. For more information see here.
ICAS preparation support will continue to be offered in A5 during lunchtimes in Term 3 for any Middle School and Junior School students enrolled in the English and Maths ICAS exams coming up in July and August. However, this slot is also available for any student from Junior, Middle or Senior Schools, who would like support or to chat about any of the competitions and opportunities mentioned on this webpage. Mrs Gooch can help you with getting your entries in, nutting out ideas, getting resources you might need or connecting you with other students who might be interested in the same thing. So Thursday lunchtimes, Term 3, A5 with Mrs Gooch - come on over.
The Wellington Explorers' Club is a group run by parents of gifted children, which organises events and share ideas about events going on in Wellington that are of interest to gifted children. Doing activities with Wellington Explorers' Club gives families the opportunity to connect with other families with gifted children as well as try out and learn some new things around Wellington. More information is on their website. This group would be best suited to families with gifted children aged 7-12.
The Aotearoa Social Studies Educators' Network (ASSEN) is the national network of expertise for social studies education in primary and secondary schools in NZ. They started this year, and need a logo! They're looking for a design and visual communication student to put their brilliant skills to work. Your logo for ASSEN needs to be bright, colourful, instantly recognisable, and relevant to social studies education in 21st century Aotearoa. The prize is $500 for yourself, and $500 for your school.
