ICAS preparation support will continue to be offered in A5 during lunchtimes in Term 3 for any Middle School and Junior School students enrolled in the English and Maths ICAS exams coming up in July and August. However, this slot is also available for any student from Junior, Middle or Senior Schools, who would like support or to chat about any of the competitions and opportunities mentioned on this webpage. Mrs Gooch can help you with getting your entries in, nutting out ideas, getting resources you might need or connecting you with other students who might be interested in the same thing. So Thursday lunchtimes, Term 3, A5 with Mrs Gooch - come on over.
The annual QMC creative writing competition is now open. All students are invited to enter. Categories are Junior School, Middle School and Senior School - see the poster attached. Entries are due on Friday 28th September.
Love books? Love pizza? Until 3rd December if you read 7 books and collect stamps for doing so from Ms Grogan at the library, you can then go and get yourself a pizza for free from Hells Pizza. Open to all Junior School students and Middle School students in Years 7 and 8.
If you are looking for more opportunities to do art outside of school, here are a few starting points:
If you love art, engineering, being out late and the possibility of some really good food truck food, then you will want to head down to the Lux Festival on the Wellington Waterfront. The Lux Festival is a free festival that features artworks that make use of lighting. This year it will be held from 18th - 27th May. Wrap up warm and head on down.
If you are addicted to books, or are looking to read something different from what you normally go for, take up the QMC Library Classic Books Challenge. The goal is to read 20 classic books by the end of the year. Each book you read and write a little log on gains you a prize. If you read all the prizes Ms Young will present you with a super duper prize. Two lists of books are attached for you to choose books from. For more information see Ms Grogan in the library.
If your Junior School daughter is mad on animals, wildlife and environmental issues, the Kiwi Conservation Club is one they should know about. They have a great magazine for kids that is not costly, and they run some fabulous trips around Wellington for families, to places such as Mana Island, and doing things like counting crabs in mudflats.
If you are a poet, get your work into the New Zealand Poetry Society Poetry Competition by 31st May to be in to win cash prizes. There is a separate category for Haiku if you like that style of poetry also.
If you like ICAS exams, you will love the University of Canterbury Great Kiwi Science, English and Mathematics competitions. These exams are available for Year 5 & 6 students, Year 7 & 8 students, and Year 9 & 10 students. The Science exam involves questions about planet earth and beyond, the physical world and the material world and draws on student's critical thinking, investigative, and interpretative skills. The Maths exam includes questions on number and algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. The English exam tests students' skills in comprehension, grammar, spelling and understanding of audience and purpose. The cost is $8.30 per exam. The exams will be held in the last three weeks of Term 2. Prizes are awarded to top students in each exam. If you are interested in trialling these new exams for our school, get your parents to please email Holly Gooch [email protected] with your name, formclass/class, and a list of which of the exams you would like to complete. More details can be found here.
