Love books? Love pizza? Until 3rd December if you read 7 books and collect stamps for doing so from Ms Grogan at the library, you can then go and get yourself a pizza for free from Hells Pizza. Open to all Junior School students and Middle School students in Years 7 and 8.

If you are looking for more opportunities to do art outside of school, here are a few starting points:
If you love art, engineering, being out late and the possibility of some really good food truck food, then you will want to head down to the Lux Festival on the Wellington Waterfront. The Lux Festival is a free festival that features artworks that make use of lighting. This year it will be held from 18th - 27th May. Wrap up warm and head on down.
If you are addicted to books, or are looking to read something different from what you normally go for, take up the QMC Library Classic Books Challenge. The goal is to read 20 classic books by the end of the year. Each book you read and write a little log on gains you a prize. If you read all the prizes Ms Young will present you with a super duper prize. Two lists of books are attached for you to choose books from. For more information see Ms Grogan in the library.
Want to start University before you've even finished school? The Cambridge Immerse Summer (UK Summer, not NZ Summer) Programmes offer students aged 13-15 years and 16-18 years the opportunity to see what it would be like to study at University level. Some great brain food! They are held in July and August and are worth considering for 2018 or 2019. Programmes for ages 13-15 year olds include: Medicine and Biological Sciences, Law, Politics and International Relations, and Creative Writing. For ages 16-18 years there are 16 topics on offer. Don't forget to check out the costs page!
The Tall Shorts Film competition invites people to make a film on their phone and submit it for judging. Taika Waititi is the judge and $10,000 is the prize money. Entries get submitted on Facebook (Facebook.com/SparkTallShorts) and are due on 13th May 2018. Give it a go.
If you are a poet, get your work into the New Zealand Poetry Society Poetry Competition by 31st May to be in to win cash prizes. There is a separate category for Haiku if you like that style of poetry also.

Passionate about environmental issues? Imagine yourself as a journalist or documentary maker? The Young Reports for the Environment Litter Less Competition invites students from Years 7 to 13 to investigate and report on an environmental issue using either writing, photography or film. A great opportunity if you are planning on a career tackling environmental or political issues, or in journalism. More information here. Deadline is Feb 2018. For those of you in Year 10 - this could tie in nicely with your Community Project which you will be doing later in the year.
If you like ICAS exams, you will love the University of Canterbury Great Kiwi Science, English and Mathematics competitions. These exams are available for Year 5 & 6 students, Year 7 & 8 students, and Year 9 & 10 students. The Science exam involves questions about planet earth and beyond, the physical world and the material world and draws on student's critical thinking, investigative, and interpretative skills. The Maths exam includes questions on number and algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. The English exam tests students' skills in comprehension, grammar, spelling and understanding of audience and purpose. The cost is $8.30 per exam. The exams will be held in the last three weeks of Term 2. Prizes are awarded to top students in each exam.
