The National Association of Women in Construction is hosting a photographic exhibition as part of the Festival of Architecture in 2018. The exhibition is held at Resene Colour Shop, 77 Thorndon Quay (just around the corner from school) between 7am - 5pm from the 14th - 23rd September. Alongside the exhibition they are hosting an event on Tuesday 18th September 4pm - 7pm to celebrate 22 years of the National Association of Women in Construction. Flyers can be seen below.

The University of Otago is the only university in New Zealand to offer the opportunity to pursue a career as a surveyor. This is a four year degree and suits students who have good ability across the curriculum including particularly English, Maths and Science. Surveyors have excellent job prospects. There are now three three year degree options available as outlined below.
The University of Otago is now also offering a three year Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Geographic Information Systems. This degree suits people who enjoy social and physical geography, wildlife, the environment and who also enjoy working within a computer environment. Students who are interested in Land Development as a specialty area can complete a three year Land Planning and Development Bachelor of Science degree which encompasses land planning, urban design, land law and civil engineering for land development. Finally, students have the option of completing a Bachelor of Science in Survey Measurement which is ideally suited to students who are good at Maths. Graduates work in the construction industry, mining industry, hydrographic surveying, surveying and can also work in multidisciplinary companies. As part of their One Billion Trees programme, the Ministry of Primary Industries is offering four scholarships to female and Maori students who are wanting to be involved in the forestry sector. The scholarship recipients will get $8,000 per year for four years for living costs and expenses, and also get a paid internship in the industry. Recipients must be studying the Bachelor of Forestry Science or the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Forest Engineering at Canterbury University. More information can be found here. If you are interested in aeronautical engineering, the Air New Zealand Aviation Institute offers a 36 week certificate in aeronautical engineering. Placement tests are required for this, assessing your English, Maths and Physics skills, and an interview is also required. The Faculty of Engineering at The University of Auckland is hosting an evening for Year 12s and 13s who are interested in careers in engineering on Friday 3rd August 6-8pm. The event will be held just around the corner from school at the Royal Society of New Zealand, 11 Turnbull Street, Thorndon. Engineering week takes place on the 13th - 16th August in Wellington. We have booked tickets for five different events which includes trips to Beca, Aurecon, Xero and WSP Opus suitable for year 10-13. If you would like to be a part of one of these trips, you will need to email me ASAP telling me which trip/s you would like to go on. It will be first in first served. Note that you can't do both trip 3 and 4 as they are on the same day. Similarly, you can't do both trip 3 and 5 as they are both the same trip, just on different days so we can get more students there. Here are the details of the 5 trips:
Trip 1 Monday 13th August 9am – 3.15pm Aurecon Year 10 Calling all future engineers! We have an action-packed engineering day planned for you, including plenty of hands-on activities to demonstrate the real-life applications of engineering. You'll have the chance to talk to and learn from lots of different types of engineers, including civil, structural, mechanical, chemical/process and earthquake engineers. Come along to get an insight into the groundbreaking technology Aurecon is using and learn how we apply our knowledge as engineers in bringing ideas to life. Come and learn about the range of pathways you can take in the New Zealand Defence force. This includes specialist roles, for example a lawyer or doctor, trades such as engineering and communications, as well as exploring the many different tasks carried out by New Zealand Defence through the Army, Navy and Airforce. The session will be held in A5 during lunchtime on Wednesday March 21st. Open to all students from Year 10 - 13.
