The University of Otago is the only university in New Zealand to offer the opportunity to pursue a career as a surveyor. This is a four year degree and suits students who have good ability across the curriculum including particularly English, Maths and Science. Surveyors have excellent job prospects. There are now three three year degree options available as outlined below.
The University of Otago is now also offering a three year Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Geographic Information Systems. This degree suits people who enjoy social and physical geography, wildlife, the environment and who also enjoy working within a computer environment. Students who are interested in Land Development as a specialty area can complete a three year Land Planning and Development Bachelor of Science degree which encompasses land planning, urban design, land law and civil engineering for land development. Finally, students have the option of completing a Bachelor of Science in Survey Measurement which is ideally suited to students who are good at Maths. Graduates work in the construction industry, mining industry, hydrographic surveying, surveying and can also work in multidisciplinary companies.
