The University is offering two four-year conjoint degrees with the Bachelor of Product Design for 2019:
To enrol in one of these conjoint programmes students must have an overall merit endorsement in NCEA or equivalent for IB. Each year The University of Otago invites 400 current year 11 or 12 students from around the country to spend a week in Dunedin over their summer break exploring university life and a project of their interest with academics. Projects include for example, anatomy, anthropology, archaeology, classics, computer science, food science, genetics, immunology, marine science, nanochemistry, pharmacology, philosophy, electromagnetic radiation, physiology, politics, psychology, sports sciences, zoology and more. Students also get the opportunity to 'snack' on other topics in addition to their core project.
The cost of the programme is $675 which covers accommodation, meals and activities. Transport to the event is an additional cost. Scholarships are available to cover costs. Applications for the programme are due by Friday 19th October, and scholarship applications are due by 28th September. The University of Otago is the only university in New Zealand to offer the opportunity to pursue a career as a surveyor. This is a four year degree and suits students who have good ability across the curriculum including particularly English, Maths and Science. Surveyors have excellent job prospects. There are now three three year degree options available as outlined below.
The University of Otago is now also offering a three year Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Geographic Information Systems. This degree suits people who enjoy social and physical geography, wildlife, the environment and who also enjoy working within a computer environment. Students who are interested in Land Development as a specialty area can complete a three year Land Planning and Development Bachelor of Science degree which encompasses land planning, urban design, land law and civil engineering for land development. Finally, students have the option of completing a Bachelor of Science in Survey Measurement which is ideally suited to students who are good at Maths. Graduates work in the construction industry, mining industry, hydrographic surveying, surveying and can also work in multidisciplinary companies. If you are from Maori descent, are a current year 11 or 12 student, and have an interest in exploring Otago University as a study option in the future, you can apply for the Poutama Hands-on at Otago scholarship. Hands-on at Otago is run on 13 - 18 January 2019 and participants get to experience a week of activities relating to a particular university subject such as Classics or Surveying with people from all over New Zealand, and stay in a University hostel.
